Former Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan in conversation with Peter Wakelin

When he retired as Bishop of Llandaff and Archbishop of Wales in 2017, the Right Reverend Barry Morgan was the longest-serving archbishop in the worldwide Anglican communion. In 14 years he dealt with major issues as a noted progressive. During his incumbency, the Church in Wales allowed priests to enter civil partnerships and permitted the appointment of women bishops ahead of the Church of England.

Barry grew up in the Swansea valley and studied history before training for the ministry. He lectured in theology and has written in Welsh and English on aspects of ministry, church history and the poetry of R. S. Thomas. He has chaired a Shelter enquiry into homelessness and poor housing and, since stepping down as Archbishop, has sat on the Commission that appoints judges. The conversation will explore the role of an archbishop as spiritual leader or chief executive, challenges facing the church from north-south divides and evangelical schisms, interfaith dialogue and – as this is the last conversation of the year – the modern meanings of Christmas.

Peter Wakelin chairs the Board of Cadw and is President of the Contemporary Art Society for Wales. His books include Hidden Histories: Discovering the Heritage of Wales, Hill-rhythms: David Jones + Capel-y-ffin, Refugeand Renewal: Migration and British Art and several artist monographs.
