PHILIPPA ROBBINS

Same Storm is in many ways a sister show to my last exhibition at The Art Shop, Different Boats (2021). The two sequences of work belong to the same interior world of sea-scapes, bed-scapes and sometimes stress-scapes.

In the early months of the pandemic, I put aside the Baby Dreaming series that had preoccupied me. I found it impossible to continue it in our new situation and decided instead to work from objects around me in my studio. However, themes and source material from that pre-lockdown work were expressed in Different Boats by its frequent reference to beds, origami models and the drawings of Mori Yuzan in his book Hamonshū (1903).

In this exhibition I have extended that series and have continued to refer back to what came before. Beds, sleep and dreams remain key themes. I have made quilts to explore patterns in my paintings and they hang alongside the works in this show. One of them, The Sugar Loaf Quilt, is the result of a collaboration with my daughter Oonagh who makes quilts professionally.

Philippa Robbins lives and works in south Wales and studied at LaSalle SIA, Singapore and Cardiff College of Art. Her work has been exhibited widely, nationally and internationally, in both solo and group shows. In 2021 Philippa was shortlisted for the John Moore’s Painting Prize at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool, and last year she had three paintings selected for the National Eisteddfod at Tregaron.

All work is available to buy through Collectorplan from the Arts Council of Wales. This is an interest free credit scheme for the purchase of contemporary artwork.
